$20,000 Goal

The 2024/2025 season is gonna be big!

We've been steadily making improvements at Mt. Shasta Nordic Center. We'll see some exciting changes this year.

Big things are underway at the Nordic Center: a new guest services lodge is under construction, we're making another upgrade to our rental ski fleet, the School Program continues to grow, and we're starting to look at summer operations! That's a whole lot going on!

Thanks to our generous supporters, business sponsors, The Ford Family Foundation and The Nancy Driscoll Foundation, in December 2023 we bought a brand new Pisten Bully 100 snow groomer that has been a game changer. The next significant upgrade will be the guest services lodge that is under construction as you read this. We can't make promises about when the lodge will be delivered. We hope to see it this season, and we're sure you do too.

Our goal this Giving Tuesday is to raise $20,000 towards to support the wonderful programs and improvements at Mt. Shasta Nordic Center.

Kids have so much fun at Mt. Shasta Nordic Center!

Our Nordic Skiing School Program brings kids from around Siskiyou, Shasta and Jackson Counties for outdoor play and learning at Mt. Shasta Nordic Center. Our staff work with teachers to introduce youth to the joys of outdoor recreation and fitness. Through the Nordic Skiing School Program we collaborate with local schools to provide easy access to cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Every year program participation grows and we can't keep up with it. Kids and teachers simply love coming to the Nordic Center.

One of the ways we support schools in getting students outside is by reimbursing schools for their transportation costs. In the past Dignity Health grant funding has supported that program. This year we're raising funds through North State Giving Tuesday to fill that need.  As part of the program, students get rental equipment and day passes at a ridiculously low rate. This year, with funding from The McConnell Fund of the Community Foundation of the North State and a tremendous partnership with The Fifth Season and Rossignol, we'll have more new skis, boots and poles on offer.

Coming to the Nordic Center as a youngster can have a lasting impact. Just ask our Nordic Center Director, Dante, who learned to ski at the Nordic Center through the School Program when he was growing up.

Nordic year round? That's the vision

With the award of a $1.1M California State Parks and Recreation Regional Park Program grant, we've installed the new double vault toilet and the under-construction guest services lodge. Thanks to the Gateway Trails Phase II Expansion led by the Mt. Shasta Trail Association, a network of family-friendly hiking, biking and horseback riding trails through the Nordic Center were completed in 2024 to create the Gateway Learning Zone.  The Regional Parks Program grant is also funding over 5 miles of the Gateway Phase II expansion, which includes trails that will make it possible to ride from the Nordic Center to town, either through the new Pioneer Trailhead on the south end of Mt. Shasta Boulevard or by riding soon-to-be-built trails that connect with the Gateway System proper. These investments in expanding the Gateway System Trails and the Nordic Center Trailhead inspire the team at SORA to envision year-round operations at the Nordic Center to support and grow our recreation based economy. Stay tuned as we plan 2025 summer and fall events at the Nordic Center.
