Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway All American Road

Millions of years ago, the earth’s plates moved and molten lava exploded between the cracks, spouting high into the sky. All that fire and fury created the Ring of Fire, a circle of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean, which today in some places is still active – with volcanoes ready to blow. One of the best places in the world to witness the results of this geologic activity is in the area that encompasses Northern California and Southern Oregon, where the landscape is dominated by soaring volcanic peaks, expansive lava flows, dramatic caves, bubbling mud pots, and steaming fumaroles. The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway All-American Road, only one of 42 officially designated All American Roads in the United States, recognized for their special qualities and scenery that are found nowhere else, introduces you to 24 different volcanic expressions and landscapes - along 500 miles traveling between Crater Lake National Park and Lassen Volcanic National Park.  Starting at the deep caldera created by Mount Mazama’s explosive eruption about 7,700 years ago, you'll stand in awe of Mount Shasta, explore Lava Beds National Monument with the highest concentration of lava tube caves anywhere on earth, Medicine Lake, and Lassen Volcanic National Park with some of the strangest geologic phenomenon anywhere. The Byway route passes through dense, mountainous forests and broad wetlands, past clear streams, and pastoral farms and ranches, while punctuating the landscape with volcanic wonders at every turn.  

The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway All American Road and its managing entity, Volcanic Legacy Community Partnership are requesting your funding support because when the Byway was formed, there was plenty of Federal funding.  Now there is none, and little prospect of any additional Federal support.  So we're on our own, working hard to promote great visitor experiences that deliver the economic impact of visitor spending to the small towns and rural communities along the way. We are committed to maintaining this beautiful route and the qualities that make it an All American Road.  We appreciate your willing to help us to continue that mission.
