The VITA at JEDI program is celebrating twenty years of service to the people of Siskiyou County by expanding! VITA at JEDI (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), a free tax preparation service for low- and moderate-income households serves low income and elderly tax payers in the north state. As an IRS-designated service staffed by volunteers who want to make a difference in their community, VITA at JEDI has been assisting taxpayers to capture tax benefits, such as earned income, child tax credits, and education credits that has proven to help people rise out of poverty.
VITA operates to alleviate poverty by helping rural individuals claim tax credits and serves individuals with limited English proficiency to file returns. VITA at JEDI manages 2 site sin Mount Shasta and Yreka and then travels to many corners of the county and is now expanding with services and territory.
In 2023 the VITA at JEDI program were officially designated as a Certified Acceptance Agent for the IRS. This designation means that VITA at JEDI can assist individuates who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security number but still need to file their taxes. “Providing assistance to individuals who need ITIN numbers is another tool in our toolbox to meet the needs of people in Siskiyou and surrounding communities,” said Bruce Clark, Assistant Site Coordinator for the VITA program and the designated CAA for VITA at JEDI.
The VITA Program at JEDI is one of only a few VITA sites nationwide that offer this service and is currently the only CAA in Siskiyou County.
